Timeline
Ref through the years
2009
January
Reformation is born. We start by retailoring vintage clothing in the back of our first store in Los Angeles and quickly expand into making our own new stuff with a mission of bringing sustainable fashion to everyone. We’ve grown a lot since then, but still keep sustainability at the core of everything we do.
2013
March
We go online, bringing Ref clothes worldwide.
October
We open the doors to our sustainable factory in downtown Los Angeles.
2014
2015
April
We start offsetting the company’s entire footprint and introduce RefScale to track the environmental footprint of our products.
2017
April
We make our environmental progress public with our first ever Sustainability Report, and we’ve published them on a regular basis ever since. Check out our most recent updates here.
October
We start making Ref Jeans, our water-saving denim made with organic, regenerative, and recycled cotton blends.
December
Retail X, our high-tech retail concept, launches. It brings the best of Ref’s e-commerce experience to our in-person stores with fancy features like magic wardrobes and customizable lighting. Basically the Clueless closet IRL.
2019
July
Ref goes global with our first international store in Toronto, followed by London in September.
We team up with Permira to help scale our mission to bring sustainable fashion to everyone.
2020
March
We partner with the city of Los Angeles to make masks for essential workers during the COVID-19 pandemic and donate over 300,000 masks to hospitals, shelters, and nonprofits.
November
We get even more serious about reducing our carbon footprint and commit to becoming Climate Positive by 2025. This means investing in solutions that remove more greenhouse gasses than we emit, driving climate action throughout our supply chain, and making our roadmap public so others can do it, too.
2021
April
Our stuff has been 100% carbon-neutral since 2015, but we finally make it official with a fancy certification from the Change Climate Project.
We start making really cute, completely recyclable shoes with traceable materials in Brazil.
2022
March
RefRecycling, our textile-to-textile recycling program powered by SuperCircle, launches. This takes us one step closer to becoming a circular fashion business.
2023
April
We help you keep your sh*t together with the launch of Ref Bags, our luxurious, recyclable handbag assortment manufactured sustainably in Europe.
May
We take our sustainability work to the next level with a new commitment to be Circular by 2030. This means we will create products with as close to zero virgin materials as possible, ensure every product is recyclable, and reduce waste everywhere we can.
June
We open our new NYC flagship at 62 Greene Street in SoHo.
2024
March
We start making swim, more sustainably. Featuring recycled and bio-based materials, all 100% recyclable. Half naked never looked so good.
April
We open our LA flagship at 409 N. Beverly Drive in Beverly Hills.
2025
April
In case you want to sleep with us. We make our first-ever pajamas with organically grown cotton and vintage-inspired silhouettes.
We open our 50th store, located in Vancouver. Come say hi.
September
We upgrade our factory and distribution center to a bigger and better location in Vernon, CA. Still just as sustainable, with a lot more room for it. We host tours every month if you want to see where the magic happens.
October
Reformation á Paris! We learned to speak French and launched in France with a flagship store in Le Marais.
We make our first 100% recycled sweater with 95% recycled cashmere and 5% recycled wool. Results in 96% less carbon and 89% less water than conventional cashmere, using zero virgin materials.
2026
April
We announce that we hit our Climate Positive goal, making us one of the first fashion brands to reduce our footprint in line with our science-based targets and remove more carbon from the atmosphere than we emit. Read all about it here.
